Year of the Rat

By Alex Clare

I’m an NHS worker (non-clinical) based in Brighton at the moment, but consider London home. I knew I wanted to write this poem almost a year ago in the first weeks of lockdown one, but didn’t get round to forming a coherent structure for it or putting words on paper for quite a while. I wanted to capture the feeling of creeping terror my colleagues, loved ones and I were experiencing while waiting for the inevitable first wave of the pandemic. The disconnect between the national news, the rumours we were hearing at work, and the complete denial from our so-called leaders made it an extremely anxious time and ended up taking quite a toll on my mental health.

I’m currently studying creative writing via New Writing South, and hope to apply for a masters once I’ve finished my course.

I’m @economyofscales on Instagram and Twitter.
