Anticipation Is

By Roger Haydon

a glitter patterned face mask,
a queue, a sore arm then
maybe a handshake with a stranger,
hugs again from friends,
a journey on a crowded bus,
a choir in full voice,
a meal in a restaurant,
movies and popcorn,
cuddles from grandchildren,
conga lines at a party,
several pints in the pub,
high tea and sticky cakes
with neighbours on the sofa.
For now, put the kettle on to boil,
place the cups on their saucers
and smell the roasting coffee.

Roger was born in London, lives in the North East and retired in from the NHS 2012. He now tends an allotment and is getting deep pleasure from writing stuff.

I wrote this piece to say hold your breath, the vaccine’s great but stay careful there’s a long way yet to go.
