Same Boat

By Andy Eycott

Feel that itch

I want to scratch
this year from my skin

the summer
of this torment
seemed easier to bare

Winters nail
drawn across a chalkboard

I stare into the mirror
same boat
set adrift months ago

I deploy
windless sails of my smile

hook another sheet
over my ears
across my mouth

what I really feel
what I really want to say

Andy has been published in a number of magazines and anthologies both in print and online. He lives and works in South East London.

This was written from a feeling I couldn’t quite put my finger on. A mixture of detachment, endless routine and confused guidelines. Also, the underlying nagging of isolation however positive I try to feel and the perception that we are all in the same boat.

I so relate to this – every day at work, the utter ambivalence hidden behind the mask…
